Twenty-five year-old Bahraini photographer Ishaq Madan juggles his love of photography with his 'day job' as a banker. He first indulged in photography at the age of around ten, when he started taking photographs of his family during vacations abroad and, encouraged by his mother to sharpen his skills, his passion for the art developed. Ishaq's first book of photography titled: Sweet dreams, Bahrain will be released soon.
Over the years, people have often asked me about my style and yet I still fail to find the answer. Perhaps I haven’t really found my particular style yet? However, I do try not to become restricted and confined to a single genre of photography, and I really enjoy capturing and preserving time and moments around me.
My inspiration is derived mainly from movies and television series demonstrating how different cinematographers apply their specific signature style through the medium of film and photography. I like to study how they operate. A good example would be the films Blade Runner and Drive and how they inspire my night-time photography; the mesmerizing neon-filled streets and reflections of light off a wet road after some rainfall. And it is this real passion that motivates me to wake up and just shoot.
Photography has certainly changed my life for the better; its creative medium has opened many doors for me, and has introduced me to experiences and people I would normally have never met. A camera is a passport to another world, and has awoken me to appreciate this world; as I stroll around with my camera, I see stories going on around me and am elevated to see and feel so much more. Both through the lens and my mind, I am always on alert to experience something new.
I recently collaborated with telecom giant VIVA, and my work has been featured in both local and regional exhibitions including Sharjah Art Foundation’s Vantage Point 5, Al Riwaq Gallery and Malja, and in publications including Gulf Daily News and Bahrain Confidential. My plans are to develop internationally, as well as to set up photography workshops for the local community that has supported me throughout my journey.
